When measuring rectangular shaped areas. Just multiply the length by the width in metres and you have the answer.

When measuring more complex shapes it is best to divide them into separate rectangles and then add them together to get a total area.

What is Efflorescence?

Efflorescence is a whitish crystalline deposit that manifests on the surface of stone and masonary surfaces. These unsightly salt deposits are for the most part, water-soluble salts from various possible sources. For efflorescence to occur there must be water present to dissolve and transport the salts.

Salt-bearing water, upon reaching the surface evaporates, leaving the salts behind. Fresh efflorescence may be easily removed with a dry brush, but over time the salts react with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and harden, until only acid washing or grinding will remove it. In extreme cases the efflorescence can obscure the surface and the crystallisation causes erosion and pitting.

For water to carry or move salts to the surface there must also be channels through which to move and migrate. Although stone and masonary surfaces are solid, strong and very dense, they contain millions of microscopic capillaries that run from the interior to the surface. Moisture from rain, sprinkler systems, underground sources, poor site drainage or dew enters these microscopic capillaries.

Efflorescence can be removed, however it is an indication of another issue which will need to be dealt with to prevent the problem from simply reoccurring. Water entry to the tiling system can be minimised by binding, waterproofing and sealing, among other options. Without water, the efflorescence cannot form.

The more dense a material, the more difficult it will be for water to transport salts to the surface. Conversely, the more porous the material, the greater the ease with which salts are transported and deposited.

There must two conditions present to create efflorescence:
water soluble salts efflorescence
  • 1- A source of water soluble salts.
  • 2- Water moving through the material to carry the salts to the surface. The water evaporates and leaves the white powder behind.

The two key principles for minimising efflorescence are to minimise the entry of water, and to direct water that penetrates the tiling system to a designed outlet.

How to minimize the possibility of efflorescence

Deepshield™ penetrating sealer will prevent water from being absorbed and also allow the stone to release any built up vapour. Unsealed surfaces with absorbed moisture can also result in efflorescence being deposited on the surface as the moisture evaporates.

Deepshield™ penetrating, impregnating sealer travels below the surface of the stone or masonary surface, filling in voids and eliminating water migration, thus preventing the salt build up in the stone.

Deepshield™ will penetrate right in to the pore structure creating a deep water resistant barrier which will be more effective at keeping out water and any dissolved salts.

There are a number of potential causes of efflorescence, including:

  • Moist conditions
  • Condensation
  • Rain or dew
  • Groundwater
  • Low temperatures

Sealing with Deepshield™ water-repellent deep impregnating sealer will provide protection and a reasonable lifespan to stone and masonary surfaces in areas with salt-water such as around a saltwater pool or close to a beach.

It is recommended that surfaces should be sealed on all 6 sides or even dip sealed prior to installation in areas with salt water.
