HOW IT WORKS

Sealer works by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology developed to create a protective barrier to water and oils. The active component is a molecule consisting of silicon, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The molecule has two ends, one hydrophilic the other hydrophobic. When applied, the hydrophilic end reacts with moisture retained in the substrate and breaks away to form another compound that reacts within the masonry lattice. This reaction forms a bond that is stronger than any mechanical or hydrogen bonding of conventional film forming sealers, the exposed hydrophobic end of the molecule changes the surface energy with the result that water and oils are now repelled, but the micro pores are still open enough to allow moisture vapour to escape making the treated surface breathable.

APPLICATION

• This product is designed for use on porous grout lines only.
• Grout lines to be treated should be clean and absorbent. Product can be applied to damp surfaces.
• Do not seal the grout until cured, allow minimum of 3 days before application.
• Protect any adjacent areas by masking to avoid splashes or overspray onto surfaces not intended to be treated.
• Apply product liberally to grout lines using a pad or brush.
• Flood coat the grout lines to achieve a “wet” look.
• Leave for 5 to 20 minutes then reapply a second coat whilst still wet.
• Do not allow product to dry on the tiles. Wipe excess product off after 5 minutes with a clean, dry cloth.
• Allow grout lines to dry, full curing will take 24 hours, however, surface can be walked on after 2-4 hours dependent on drying conditions.
• Clean tools with water.
• Do not allow sealed grout to get wet until the sealer has fully cured (24 hours).

• Q: Is it necessary to seal grout after installing tile?
• A: Grout is a cement-based product that locks tiles in place, protects their edges from chipping and provides an overall finished look. The cement content makes grout porous, which means liquids are absorbed if they’re not cleaned right away. Grout isn’t as resilient as the tile it surrounds and dirty grout can hold stains, bacteria and other germs. Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer improves the look of the grout, helps extend its life and provides a healthier environment for your home. Grout sealer will help to maintain a clean look for longer and ensure your maintenance cleaning is more effective.
• Q: Does all grout need to be sealed?
• A: Regular cement grout, even polymer-modified grout is porous and subject to staining when not properly sealed. All grout, except for 100% epoxy grout should be sealed to avoid staining and deterioration.
• Q: How do I know if my grout is sealed or not?
• A: An easy way to find out if your grout is sealed is to carry out the water test. Place a tablespoon of water on the surface for 20 minutes, remove the water with a tissue or cloth, pressing hard to soak up any water in the texture of the surface. If the water is absorbed or leaves a dark mark, then it requires sealing, otherwise, the surface is adequately sealed and does not require further sealing.
• Q: Can I prevent mould and mildew from growing on my grout?
• A: Mould and mildew growth is a fairly common occurrence in wet areas, such as bathrooms and showers, since it requires a dark, moist area to live. The key to removing the ideal environment for mould and mildew growth is to seal the grout preventing soap scum and moisture from penetrating the grout surface. Regular maintenance is also recommended preventing the build-up of soap scum.
• Q: How many days after grouting with cement based grout can I seal with Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer?
• A:It is recommended that grout is given a minimum of 3 days to cure before sealing.
• Q: Will Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer allow my surfaces to breathe?
• A: Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer is vapour permeable, allowing the surface to breathe, meaning any moisture that gets in behind your tile is able to escape.
• Q: Is sealing with Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer difficult?
• A: Sealing with Deepshield™ Grout Sealer requires little effort beyond painting a straight line. Once the grout is sealed, spills and stains will not be absorbed ensuring maintenance is made a lot easier.
• Q: How long will Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer last?
• A: The longevity can vary depending on the type of grout, where it is located and what type of wear the grout is exposed to. Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer should last up to 10 years. Use and ongoing maintenance will affect sealer durability.
• Q: How long will it take Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer to dry?
• A: Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer will be touch dry after 4 hours and requires 24 hours to fully cure.
• Q: Can sealing the grout also protect my tiles against deterioration?
• A: Sealed grout not only protects against staining, discolouration and mould/mildew growth, it can help protect the tile floor from water damage. Properly sealed grout will help keep water from seeping beneath tiles. Any water leakage on a tile floor without sealed grout can lead to damaged tiles as well as mould growth on the sub-floor. Sealing tile grout means that you apply grout sealer to the grout and let it infiltrate the porous structure, before the moisture.
• Q: Can Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer be used to seal stone or tile?
• A: Sealing stone or tile is not recommended with Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer as it is formulated for use on cement-based grout only.
• Q: How is a sealer applied?
• A: First, the surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned, and fully dried, the sealer is then applied and allowed to soak into the grout material for five to ten minutes. Finally, the excess sealer is cleaned off the surface and allowed to dry.
• Q: What does Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer protect against?
• A: Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer repels water-based and oil-based liquids, prevents stains caused by most food and beverages; and protects the surface from dirt and impurities.
• Q: Can I apply Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer to vertical surfaces?
• A: Absolutely, Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer is an excellent sealer for shower walls. It also assists in preventing the growth of mould and mildew.
• Q: How do I clean a surface treated with Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer?
• A: Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer provides excellent protection against staining; however, it does not prevent the surface from becoming dirty, simply use a pH neutral cleaner such as Deepshield™ pH Neutral Cleaner. Do not use harsh cleaning agents such as abrasive powders, ammonia, acids, bleach or abrasive pads.
• Q: Can I apply a topical coating to a surface already treated with Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer?
• A: Deepshield™ does not recommend this due to possible bond and/or aesthetic issues, however if you choose to apply a topical sealer to a surface treated with Deepshield™ please carry out a test on a sample area first to determine the result.
• Q: Are your products environmentally friendly?
• A: Yes. Deepshield™ sealers are non-toxic water based sealers and can be used indoors and outdoors, with no unpleasant odours or flammability issues.
• Q: Can I use Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer to seal around my fireplace tiles?
• A: Yes you can, Deepshield™ Sealer is a non-toxic, water-based and non flammable, making it suitable for use around a fireplace area.
• Q: Will sealing make my floors dirt resistant?
• A: Sealing with an impregnating sealer will make the surface stain resistant, but not dirt resistant. The sealed surface should be maintained as regularly as other non-sealed surfaces. If a problematic substance such as sticky tree gum falls on a sealed surface, it can still be difficult to clean, but should not permanently stain the surface, as it might an unsealed surface.
• Q: Will sealing with Deepshield™ stop my shower leaking?
• A: The most common reasons for a shower to leak are (a) leaking pipes in the wall, (b) the sheet membrane under the tiles has failed or (c) the joint between the shower drain and tiles has failed. If the grout and flexible joint sealant in the shower are in a good condition then sealing with Deepshield™ is certainly an excellent and relatively inexpensive first option in stopping the leak. Fixing a leaking pressure pipe is a job for a plumber.
• Q: Why are water-based sealers recommended over solvent sealers?
• A: Solvent sealers are not recommended for health and safety reasons. They also require more skills during application, as sealing tiles that contain any moisture could result in the surface turning white and require resurfacing.
• Q: Will I still get some staining after sealing?
• A: We believe our sealers are the best of their type available and are used daily by hundreds of professional applicators as well as thousands of DIY home owners. However, even impregnating sealers have their limits. For instance our sealers will not stop sensitive natural stone from etching, so to minimise absorption, spillages should be cleaned up immediately.
• Q: How can I remove excess product that has dried on the surface of my tiles?
• A: After sealing, immediately wipe off all excess sealer; not doing so could result in the surface looking cloudy or even patchy. Something similar can also happen if the surface is too hot, so a general rule is that if the surface is hot to touch then it is too hot to seal. If the sealer is less than a few days old, the residue can be removed by scrubbing the tiles with a residue remover, at least 48 hours after sealing. 
  After removing the excess you should check if the cleaned surface still repels water, if not those affected areas should be resealed.

• Q: Can someone apply your products for me?
• A: Deepshield™ has many trusted Accredited Applicators. You can contact these applicators independently to obtain a quote for applying our products. • Q: Why is it necessary to carry out a test trial with the sealer before doing the full job?
• A: Every surface is subtlety different. Unless you have applied the sealer to the exact same surface with the same conditions before, it is vital to conduct a small trial to ensure you get the result you are after.
• Q: What is the difference between an impregnating sealer and a topical sealer?
• A: Topical sealers produce a physical barrier over the surface, which also creates a darkening, yellowing or glossy effect. Surface (topical) sealers usually don't last long, they can make the floors slippery and need to be completely removed the next time sealing is required. Salts and efflorescence may also build-up under the non-breathable surface, causing the coating to appear cloudy.
